Iredell Health System has successfully recruited its first class of internal medicine resident physicians. The group of seven residents will commence their training at Iredell Memorial Hospital on July 1, 2025.

The health system received over 600 applications for its newly accredited internal medicine residency program and participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This accomplishment marks a significant milestone for the new program.

“This is an incredible achievement for our health system as we transform from a community hospital to Iredell County’s first teaching hospital for resident physicians,” said John Green, President & CEO.

The NRMP, commonly known as "The Match," connects medical school graduates with residency programs in their chosen specialties. Students apply, interview, and rank their preferred programs while a matching algorithm aligns these preferences with those of the programs.

Match Day this year fell on Friday, March 21. It is a crucial event where residents discover if they matched and learn which program they will join. At Iredell Health System, residents will undergo three years of training to become internal medicine physicians.

“We look forward to welcoming our first class of residents who will spend the next three years completing their pathway to board certification in their specialty,” stated Joseph Mazzola, DO, VPMA, Designated Institutional Official.

As part of their residency, these new doctors will integrate into Iredell County communities by living and working locally. The residency program was approved for a total of 21 positions spread across three classes of seven each.

The ACGME is responsible for accrediting graduate medical education programs including physician residencies and fellowships across the United States. According to the ACGME: “The ACGME’s accreditation model and processes ensure and improve the quality of graduate medical education in the United States."
