North Carolina lawmakers don't want patients to be left alone during their final days of life while at a hospital under a new law the state Senate approved.
“I’ve heard devastating stories of patients young and old who, in the final hours of their lives, have not been able to say goodbye to the people they love, or to feel the loving comfort of their lifelong partner," bill sponsor Sen. Warren Daniel (R-Avery) said in a statement posted to Senate President Phil Berger's (R-Rockingham) Medium website on June 19.
The No Patient Left Alone Act allows adult patients receiving end-of-life care to designate one visitor to have access to their room as long as they follow on-site visitation rules, Senate President Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) posted to his Medium website. The rule also applies to minors and those with developmental disabilities.
"Every patient deserves the right to spend their last days in this world with a family member by their side," Daniel said in the statement. "We have to prevent this tragedy from happening again in our North Carolina hospitals.”
