Mooresville Police Chief Ron Capurciani pledged to keep officers accountable to high standards, the local Patch website reported on June 2.

The chief's comments come following the death of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of a now-former white Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, who has since been charged with murder. Floyd's death has sparked nationwide protests, sometimes resulting in clashes with police, with calls for changes to policing. The three other officers connected to Floyd's death have also been charged.

"Unfortunately, the actions of a few officers have broken the public trust for many in law enforcement," Capurciani told Patch.

Campurciani, Moorseville Mayor Mile Atkins and Town Manager Randy Herman released a statement to assure residents they supported the termination of the officers responsible for Floyd's death.

"In Mooresville, our law enforcement officers take an oath to protect and service all members of their community," the letter read, which was posted to the municipality's Facebook page. "The Mooresville Police Department is committed to uphold that oath in [a] manner that adheres to a standard of fair treatment, with dignity and respect to all we encounter while fulfilling that oath."
