Mitchell Community College issued the following announcement on Mar. 25.

Gavin Doyle Cox, 22, of Huntersville, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Gavin’s family has chosen to honor his legacy by partnering with Mitchell Community College to establish the Gavin Cox BLET Scholarship.
Gavin was a graduate of East Carolina University in Criminal Justice. He was currently enrolled in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Mitchell. Gavin left an everlasting impression on everyone he met. He will forever be remembered for his radiating smile, his larger-than-life personality, and his infectious energy.
