Iredell County students recently participated in a week-long Camp Med program at Iredell Memorial Hospital, designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in the healthcare industry. The event, held on June 26, was organized by Iredell Health System and welcomed students from various local schools including North Iredell High School and Statesville High School.

The participants, comprising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, underwent an application process to attend the camp. Out of many applicants, 16 students were chosen to engage in the five-day program. They wore official white coats and badges as they explored different healthcare sectors.

During their time at Camp Med, students toured several clinical departments at Iredell Memorial Hospital such as Endoscopy, Dialysis, Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab, Radiology, and The Birth Place. Leadership from Community Relations and Quality and Clinical Outcomes provided additional insights into the healthcare field. A significant part of the program included a visit to Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem.

Camp Med is sponsored by Northwest AHEC and Wake Forest School of Medicine. It aims to educate young individuals about various career paths within healthcare.

Angela Whicker, Education Specialist at Iredell Health System, expressed her enthusiasm for working with students: “Camp Med allows students to explore healthcare careers and receive valuable information that ultimately prepares them for the future. Everyday is an adventure for them that is waiting to be discovered.”
