The summer heat can be dangerous. Following these tips can help us all stay safe during extreme heat waves—

What happens?

Extreme heat or heat waves occur when the temperature reaches extremely high levels or when the combination of heat and humidity causes the air to become oppressive.

Who is most at risk?

o Children

o Older adults

o Outside workers

o People with disabilities

Where is there a larger risk?

o Houses with little to no AC

o Construction worksites

o Cars

How to avoid heat-related injuries:

o Wear sunscreen daily

o Stay hydrated with water & avoid sugary beverages

o Limit intake of alcoholic beverages or fluids that have too much salt

o Stay cool in an air-conditioned area

o Wear light-weight, light colored, loose fitting clothes

o Eat small meals, eat more often, and avoid foods that are high in protein, which increases body heat

o Keep your medicines in a cool, dry place

o Check up on friends or neighbors who live alone

Take advantage of Operation Fan Heat Relief, which provides fans for individuals 60 & older, as well as adults with disabilities through Oct. 31.
