IREDELL COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT: Press Release Concerning US Monkeypox Outbreak
0Comments

Iredell County Health Department issued the following announcement on June 3.

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by an orthopox virus typically found in West and Central Africa. It does not typically occur naturally in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking multiple clusters of monkeypox that have been reported in early to mid-May in West African countries, Europe and North America.

The CDC reports that as of May 26, 2022, ten (10) cases of monkeypox have been identified in the United States in the last few weeks. Currently there are no known cases of monkeypox in North Carolina so there is no known immediate local risk.

However, this situation is being closely monitored by the Iredell County Health Department and the NC Department of Health and Human Services. If a local case is identified, the health department will work with state and local partners to prevent further spread of the virus.
