As many travelers eagerly anticipate their vacation time, they also face the challenge of maintaining good health while on the move. Andrea Colvin, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Stout Internal Medicine & Wellness, shares valuable advice on how tourists can safeguard their well-being during travels.

Travelers often encounter issues such as traveler’s diarrhea, respiratory infections, and insect-borne diseases. While some ailments might be inevitable, Colvin insists that proactive measures can prevent many health problems. “While traveling, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, protect yourself from the sun with sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen, and pack a first aid kit,” says Colvin. She also advises consulting with a primary care provider before trips, especially when vaccines are required or when specific health concerns need addressing.

Food and water safety are key considerations when traveling, particularly outside the United States. Proper hygiene and awareness of food choices can mitigate the risk of foodborne illnesses. “Wash hands with soap and water prior to and immediately after preparing or eating foods. Avoid consuming salads, uncooked vegetables, raw unpeeled fruits, and unpasteurized fruit juices,” Colvin recommends. She further advises using hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available, while noting that some germs cannot be effectively removed by hand sanitizer alone. Travelers should also avoid drinking tap water and consuming ice.

Colvin offers additional tips for ensuring a healthy travel experience. Maintaining hydration is crucial, with at least 64 ounces of water being recommended daily, barring any medical restrictions. Adequate sleep should remain a priority by sticking to a routine and creating a restful environment. Frequent handwashing with soap and water should be practiced, and when dining, travelers should select reputable establishments and exercise caution regarding tap water.

Nutrition during travel can be managed by taking supplements, carrying healthy snacks, choosing cooked vegetables and meats, and avoiding processed food. Physical activity is encouraged, either through walks or simple hotel exercises. Stress management also plays a key role, with Colvin suggesting a planned itinerary that incorporates rest periods, adaptability, and relaxation techniques.

With proper planning and conscious decision-making, travelers can enjoy their vacations while minimizing health risks and staying well.
