When faced with illness or injury, choosing between urgent care and the emergency room can be challenging, especially when primary care offices are closed. Acute medical issues such as minor cuts, sprains, rashes, and common viruses are typically suitable for urgent care facilities. More severe conditions like stroke symptoms, chest pain, difficulty breathing, major wounds should be addressed at an emergency room.
Rhonda Ruppe, RN, BSN, Director of Iredell Health System’s Emergency Department advises: “If it’s not a life-threatening emergency, I always encourage everybody to call their primary care provider first if they are open.” However, if immediate attention is required and the primary care provider is unavailable, patients must decide based on their medical history and current symptoms whether to visit urgent care or the ER.
Urgent care may suffice for someone with a persistent cough who is generally healthy. Conversely, if that person has a condition like COPD, an ER visit might be necessary. Urgent care centers can identify emergencies but may not have the resources to handle them on-site.
Emergency departments operate through triage systems that prioritize treatment based on severity. A heart attack patient will receive immediate attention over someone with less critical symptoms. Ruppe emphasizes patience in these situations: “What they may not see is that the other patient’s blood pressure is extremely elevated and they are on the verge of a heart attack.”
In emergencies involving stroke-like symptoms or chest pain, calling 911 is crucial as EMS provides life-saving interventions en route to the hospital. “Stroke-like symptoms, chest pain…these are all great reasons to call 911,” says Ruppe.
Iredell Health System offers two urgent care locations in Statesville and Mooresville operating daily throughout the year. The Mooresville facility operates 24/7 while Statesville is open from 7 am to 11 pm daily.
Additionally, establishing a relationship with a primary care provider can prevent emergencies by creating personalized health plans. Iredell Health System has several providers accepting new patients for those seeking comprehensive healthcare management.
For emergencies requiring immediate intervention, individuals should contact 911 or proceed to their nearest emergency department. Iredell Memorial Hospital’s ER remains open around the clock every day of the year.
